Using Bluetooth With Skype

Hi All,

I have anew motorola bluetooth headset (H5) and am trying to figure out if I can use it with Skype?

My G4 recognizes the headset, but I cannot seem to get Skype to recognize it.

I found a website which said to go the the tools and then options are to make some changes, but cannot find that anywhere!

Any musicians out there?

I was wondering if there are any Mac users out there who can recommend a good music transcriber to slow down the tempo of songs you like to learn how to play. I'm using the evaluation version of Transcribe! at present, but it doesn't read M4P files, which is the format iTunes downloads most of the songs in.

Bit of a 'tard when it comes to computers, so if anyone also knows how to change the format of an M4P file to something that might be readable, that would be helpful too.

Apple Customer Service Kicks Ass!

I have been having problems with downloading iWork 08 from the Mac site. I spent 1 hour with them on line 2 nights ago and called back again last night. After spending time going through things, I was moved upline to another software tech specialist and make a long story short, I am getting a new version of iWorks 08 shipped express to my door...FREE of charge!

This was the ONLY problems I've had with my Mac since I got it and Apple support pulled through in a stellar manner!

Just more reason that Apple gets props in my book!!

Adobe school?

I am trying to find a good school to start a multimedia and web design course. Sadly the schools I have found cost about 14,000 a year CRAZY! I have no problem teaching myself really. Does anyone have any advice out thier? I know o lynda.com and I've heard of the element k online training anyone have any advice? Simply lost in a sea of information.

Quark won't open

I'm running Quark 6.5 on my Mac OS10. My Quark had been working fine and now this morning it won't open. The window showing Quark will open and the icon will jump, but the clock just runs and runs and nothing happens. I read a past post that talked about trashing the preferences folder, but I'm not sure which folder they mean. Any help would be appreciated.

Using iTunes on an external drive ?

Hey all,

I have a question. I just moved all my music in my itunes library to an external harddrive to free up some space on my computer. itunes seems to recognize it ok and such. The problem i'm having is that sometimes when I play songs from itunes it is skipping. Like there is a delay. I'm sure this has to do with the hard drive, and someone told me it had something to do with the hard drive warming up. Is this true ? Is there some type of setting or something that I can change to fix this ?

Need help with restart issue on a powerbook pismo.

Hello,

I was compelled to "restart" my computer even though it was working just fine and now it won't restart. The battery is charged and the
power adapter is alive and well. The power button on the computer works but the monitor won't go anywhere past a white screen with
a tiny icon alternating between a face and question mark. Tried the reset button located on the back panel but nothing doing.

The computer runs on osx.3.

Does anyone know how I could fix this problem???

scanning software?

Since I upgraded to Leopard I've lost the ability to scan with my HP all in one. Does anyone know of any good software that is either open source or not too expensive? I uninstalled the original HP programs because I wanted to get the latest drivers for 10.5 and the printer but I'm not sure the new drivers would've worked with the old programs. Anyone know if that's the case as well? Any help would be appreciated!

The big "Q" with a question mark

While in Safari, I was going to sample a sound bite, instead I got the big "Q" with a question mark again. I had this issue before and it was fixed with the following solution...
In System preferences QUICKTIME/ MIME SETTINGS/Still Images
UNCHECK:
Flask Pix
PhotoShop Image
PDF Image

Then in Miscellaneous...
UNCHECK ALL

The issue was fixed until my system downloaded and updated my Quicktime to 7.3 Now I can NOT uncheck the Quicktime HTML (QHTM) in the Miscellaneous window and once again Safari won't play videos I just get the big "Q" with the question mark

Why does Quicktime choose to torture us so....

I now have to switch to Firefox or Netscape to listen to audio or view video

Is Quicktime at war with Safari?

Coupla Questions

Hi folks I have a couple questions. I have Dual Processor G4, 384MB SDRAM and OSX 10.4.11.

I'm a former Mac guy gone PC for 20 years and now back to Mac, so please forgive me if these questions are basic.

'm having some trouble with my keyboard, the "home, end, page up and page down keys don't work) only the delete key and the help key work.

I got the mac second hand without a keyboard and I stopped by the Apple store and bought a new corded keyboard about 4 months ago and those keys have never worked since day one. I'm a keyboard shortcut junkie and having to transition back to using the mouse for certain things is wasting time and separating my hand from the keyboard.

Secondly I need more RAM desperately, can I stick standard SDRAM into the Mac, do they have to be matched and what is the maximum amount I can put in?

Hello, I just installed 2gb of memory in my Macbook Pro Core duo. It is working perfectly, despite what the manual warned that I had to use 2 modules of 1gb each.
My question is if there is a way (maybe thru software) to increase the memory up to 3 or maybe 4gb. I ask because this model is supposed to only support up to 2gb max.

Need help with Photo workflow

I just recently bought a new 24" Imac and I am having a couple of problems that I hope you more experineced Mac users can help me with.
I shoot both raw & jpg images and then download them to my hard drive. With my PC, I could name the photos as I downloaded them and then "sort" the files between CR2 (raw) and jpegs - this would split the 2 different file types so that I could easily copy/paste the different file types into a sub folder. After downloading and making the main folder & sub-folders, I would burn them to a DVD as they are usually over 2gig in size.
I cannot get iPhoto to name the photos, nor get them to sort by file type nor burn them to DVD - as it wants to make a slideshow and all I want is to burn the images to DVD for a backup.
I found a program called "renamer4mac" that works easy enough at renaming the files but I still cannot seperate the jpgs from the raw files. Does anyone have experience with Photo Mechanic ?
I know I am green and still learning to use the Mac but I am becoming frustrated with trying to find real solutions through Apple support page and reading so many threads that do not answer my particular problems. Apple support states there is a Backup program in Applications but it is not there. Is this an extra program I need to purchase ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Monitor question...

I recently purchased a new 24. GHz Intel Core Duo iMac and I've got a question about the display. It seems that as I tilt the display there is a major color change, not unlike a gradient from light to dark, from the top to the bottom of the display. At first I though this was normal due to some sort of technological constraint in monitors, but after checking things out on another iMac of the same type I'm starting to think I may have a defective display.

Anyone else run into this type of thing? Heard anything about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

The lesser of two evils?

I am considering a new MacBook Pro to replace my G4PBook. The main reason is the migration to Adobe CS3 for Photoshop and InDesign. As I understand these are optimized for the Intel chip, logic tells me to move forward. Now a reliable Apple colleague is telling me to stay where I am as all my G4 software will run wore on the Intel than CS3 would on my G4...

I use my machine to (obvoiously) go online, FileMaker Pro, MS Office, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Flash.

Can anyone share their experience on this and give some input?

the Mac Pro (tower)

I'm a film maker who will eventually go into HD production, so i have to move up from my G4 powerbook, which has been serving me well up till now to something beefier... i was thinking of the G5 tower, but then i saw the Mac Pro tower, and all its potential in upgrades and i thought,, well then!

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

Do I need to worry?

Unbelievable.

I was SO happy when I bought my first mac (macbook) last month. I was even happier when I found out I get a free ipod and $100 off a printer! Yay! All I had to do was send in a special rebate form and upc codes and I get a refund.

Not so. Even though I sent in all my forms and UPC codes (and yes, I made copies of all those, which I will now have to send in to apple and hope they accept them because they're not the originals), apple has managed to lose all that along the way. To further my frustration, the promo hotline they have set up to help is, hands down, the WORST phone system ever. It's designed to avoid (with a series of confusing prompts and roundabout number pushing) letting you, the customer, talk to someone who can help, and even when you (finally) accidentally stumble upon someone who is supposed to help, they don't know what to do. When you finally convince them that you need to talk to a manager, they accidentally drop your call, and you have to start the fun phone button pushing all over again, hoping you'll stumble upon another operator.

So I may be out $300 bucks because I fell for their "rebate" crap, and now they can't be bothered to help me get my money back. Thanks, Apple. I wouldn't have bought an extra ipod I don't need if I knew I was going to have to pay for it. But you said it was free. So far, it's not.

Anyone else had issues with rebates? Can anyone offer tips?

sudden shut down on Mac book

Our mac book has started switching itself off unexpectedly. When we start up there are no messages re: Mac OS X quit etc, etc.
It may do it a few times then run ok, or it may not do it at all.
It is only 12 months old and has had no other problems.

The phone, which combines an innovative touch-screen interface with the media-playing abilities of the iPod, is currently sold only in the U.S.

An AP reporter was able to verify that an iPhone Hotz brought to the AP's headquarters on Friday was unlocked. Hotz placed the reporter's T-Mobile SIM card, a small chip that identifies a phone to the network, in the iPhone. It then connected to T-Mobile's network and placed calls using the reporter's account.

T-Mobile is the only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone's cellular technology, but smaller carriers also use the technology, known as GSM. In Europe and Asia, GSM is the dominant network technology.

The hack is complicated and requires skill with both soldering and software, and missteps may result in the iPhone becoming useless, so few people will be able to follow the instructions.

"But that's the simplest I could make them," Hotz said.

Technology blog Engadget on Friday reported successfully unlocking an iPhone using a different method that required no tinkering with the hardware. The software was supplied by an anonymous group of hackers that apparently plans to charge for it.

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel and Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock said their companies had no comment on Hotz' exploit. Hotz said the companies had not been in touch with him.

Apple shares rose $4.23, or 3.2 percent, to close at $135.30 on Friday. AT&T shares gained 26 cents, or 0.7 percent, to close at $40.36.

The iPhone has already been made to work on overseas networks using another method, which involves copying information from the SIM chip, or Subscriber Identity Module.

The SIM-chip method does not involve any soldering, but does require special equipment, and it doesn't unlock the phone — each new SIM chip has to be reprogrammed for use on a particular iPhone.

Both hacks leave intact the iPhone's many functions, including a built-in camera and the ability to access Wi-Fi networks. The only thing that won't work is the "visual voicemail" feature, which lists voice messages as if they were incoming e-mail.

Since the details of both hacks are public, Apple may be able to modify the iPhone production line to make new phones invulnerable.

Analysts said it's unlikely Apple would overhaul the iPhone's wiring to thwart the new hack because the difficulty of the procedure is likely to keep it confined to hardcore hobbyists.

"I'm having a hard time figuring out where the real pain is going to come from in this," said David Chamberlain, principal analyst with market researcher In-Stat who follows mobile devices and services. "Just selling the piece of hardware, they've made a nice profit off that."

Apple has said it plans to introduce the phone in Europe this year, but it hasn't set a date or identified carriers.

There is apparently no U.S. law against unlocking cell phones. Last year, the Library of Congress specifically excluded cell-phone unlocking from coverage under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Among other things, the law has been used to prosecute people who modify game consoles to play a wider variety of games.

Hotz collaborated online with a large number of people to develop the unlocking process. Of smaller core group, two were in Russia.

"Then there are two guys who I think are somewhere U.S.-side," Hotz said. He knows them only by their online handles.

Hotz himself spent about 500 hours on the project since the iPhone went on sale. On Thursday, he put the unlocked iPhone up for sale on eBay, where the high bid was at $12,600 late Friday. The model, with 4 gigabytes of memory, sells for $499 new.

"Some of my friends think I wasted my summer but I think it was worth it," he told The Record of Bergen County, which reported Hotz's hack Friday.

Hotz heads for college on Saturday. He plans to major in neuroscience — or "hacking the brain" as he puts it — at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

mac book pro won't sleep shut down or restart

I click on the apple icon and hit the sleep button and nothing happens i hit the shut down or restart and it seems to start but gets hung up on the blue screen and the spinning thing at the bottom of the screen but never shuts down until I hold the power button down

How/What to backup...G-Drive

I have a MacBook. I just bought a G-Drive to back up everything. I have never done backups before.

1. What is the best method to do back up files? After setting the G-Drive with with the Macbook, I just dragged and dropped all the folders from my HD into the G-Drive and it took almost 2 hours. I tried the "Burn Folder" option but it only lets you back up on to CD/disc.

2. What DON'T I need to backup? If my Macbook HD ever crashes, I have the OSX that was included with it so I am assuming there are utilities and such I don't need to backup.

3. Do the OSX discs that come with a new Mac include all the free toys like iMovie and iPhoto etc. or do I need to back those up as well?

PS. The G-drive is designed well like Apple stuff is, affordable, takes little space and is constructed like the Fort Knox vault. Really like it.

Apple Store Lectures

BTW, if any of you have never had the opportunity to go to your local apple store for one of their lectures, I would STRONGLY recmmened it.

I walked in yesterday to the NYC SOHO store to wander around, walked uo their glass steps and walked into a theatre style seating area where a lecture on iTunes was going on. The lecturer was just GREAT, very educational, very entertaining, and VERY funny! I stayed for the Mac OSX tutorial and learned lots of things I never knew before.

I now plan on makig regular visits to find out even more I never knew about.

And,. its all FREE!

As I also learned, ou can pay just $99 a year and get up to 1 hour of 1 on 1 help each week for just $99. So, thats less then $2 per hour for 1 on 1 help at the genius bar. There is NOT a deal around like that that can be beat!

Was I a fan of apple before? Of course. Did apple just woo me yesterday and turn me even more so into a bigger appreciator of the company and its technologies? Just give me an "AMEN!"

setting up keyboard

sorry this is a really basic question but I'm just getting back into Macs for the first time in 15 years. I have a Power Mac G4 dual processor running 10.4.9 and I'm having trouble with some of the keyboard functions, mainly the home and end keys are acting like page up and page down keys. I've programmed my Griffen Powermate Control nob to address this issue in some key programs, but it would be nice to get this problem figured out once and for all.

I have a Apple Keyboard, just bought a new one, since I got this Mac used for free, it didnt have any peripherals.

I'm also looking for a good book to introduce me to the functions of the Mac as someone who up until this point has been a heavy MS user, Admin, Network Engineer. I dont need a *stupid user* book since I'm not new to computers, but it would be nice to know how to get to all the settings and configs since its a bit different then what I'm used to

sudden stickies problem... please help!

I love stickies. I run my life off stickies. So it's quite distressing that suddenly there are no stickies. I click "New Note" and nothing happens. Well, not nothing... nothing comes up on the screen, but under the "Windows" menu, there's my sticky, "untitled", but I can't open it or type in it.

Help please, Quark won't open...

I've tried resetting my PRAM and running Cocktail. Still won't open. It acts like it is opening, icon jumps in dock, open screen shows onscreen, clock just turns and turns and nothing happens. Then it stops jumping and shows that it is closed in the dock, but the screen stays up and the clock keeps spinning.
It is Quark 6.1, OS 10.3.9 Never had anything like this happen before. Any help would be appreciated.

hard drive ...external v.s. internal

I have a core duo macbook pro and I'm looking at getting another hard drive. I have usb2 and firewire, but I'm wondering how much faster it would be to have a new drive installed internally and then just have the old one to use as an internal ...or if the speed difference is negligible in light of how much easier (and secure) it would be to just buy a large usb or firewire drive.

If it matters, I would be using it to store and process photos.

good customer support

Boy, I just recieved my 8 proc computer and there were two annoying scratches on the top... well, Apple was very easy to get ahold of and willing to swap out the computer. When I said I couldn't be left without a computer, we arranged openly that I would simply buy another one and then send this one back when I received the new one.

Because of Apple's awsome machine design, it will take me like 5 minutes to remove the ram and hard drive from this one and put it ito the new one (it's my ram and harddrive that I Installed).

Anyway - so bummer on the scratches, but what a relief on the way they handled it.

I still never heard back from Dell about my problem with them.... gong on a year now....

hard drive spindown question

My iMac is almost 5 years old and I am having an issue where the disc spins down constantly or after just a few seconds of inactivity. So basically, every action has to wait for a spin up and the click before it responds. Is my hard drive shot? Is it worth replacing? Any suggestions are welcome.

(For those who remember the whole thing with that stupid green organization that I will not mention their name, but let it be know I do not like them.) I got pissed at them at Mac World with their stupid slogan. Whatever. I still do not seem them targeting Dell, HP, Casio, Sony, Etc... (I will not even start on them, as I have a lot to say and do not think this is the Tribe for that.)

I think Apple has been pretty politically consciousness to the environment and as their statement even says they are looking towards the future. So they are not perfect. They are a business in America like every other business out there.

Question About iTunes

I've set the thing to "random" play and made the selection "less likely" in the section about how often you'd like to hear the same song by the same artists but still the player will pick the songs from the same album and artisit over again in an 8-10 hour period. I've also chosen "Repeat Off" as well!

I'm going to use a program called audacity to record audio, but I don't know if there is a universal audio format????

In other words, I want to be able to have these files downloaded onto my website and want anyone with an mp3 player/ipod to download the file andhave it be playable. The ipod uses an ARSI (?) format which is not playable on other players.

Will I need to record it or have 2 different types of files for IPOD users and other MP3 players on my website so everyone has access to the files???

Old powerbook- PLEASE HELP!

Hi, I have a G3 powerbook (year 1999) that I just purchased for $80 (my desktop crashed with the blue screen of death) cause I needed something fast. The guy I brought it from said it was fine for the internet, which is all I really need. I have a DSL connection, and I'm not tech saavy enough to get it connected- it has to be configured manually somehow- or this guy just jipped me and it can only use dial up?? Someone please help! Moving iTunes To A 2nd Drive on my Mac Pro?

burning cd's

I'm new to Tribe.net, so I hope this is an OK kind of question to be asking. Seems so from what I've seen...
Has anyone used a G-Tech G-DRIVE 250GB FW400/800 Hard Drive with a Mac? I have an old G3 iBook which is giving me the "no more room on disk" message because I'm using Photoshop and have too many pics on this poor little thing. I'm really nervous about it giving out and want to buy an external hard drive ASAP for periodic back up. In researching drives on line none have consistently good reports. (It's always "I like the LeCie/Maxtor/etc BUT I had one/two/three fail on me" etc.) The G-Tech G-DRIVE is one that Apple sells on their web site and I've only seen good reviews for it, but there aren't MANY reviews, so I don't know if I can trust the few I've seen. From what I've gathered, I want one with Firewire that runs at 7200rpm. It also needs to work with the new Mac Book Pros because I hope to get one soon. So, again, has anyone used the G-Tech G-DRIVE 250GB FW400/800 Hard Drive with a Mac?

Logic Board fix

My wife's iBook took a trip south earlier this week and after much research, disassembly, reassembly, testing, and cursing it now works again. The symptoms were the infamous (now they tell me) black screen of no video and cooling fan running at warp 9. However, with the help of two medium Ernie Ball Guitar picks, the ibook is running good as new kow (knock on wood). Mac won't play video downloads?

When I get an email or a video on a site, my Mac says it can't play it. Sometimes Quicktime will play if fine, but ther are many videos I can't open.

Seagate Hard Drive and best Ram quality

Hi,

I have found Seagate 750 gigs on Other World Computing, http://www.macsales.com/ thanks to a Forum user. But there are 2 of them:

1) 750 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA II 7200 RPM 16 MB W/Perpendicular Drive Technology $299

and

2) 750 Seagate Barracuda ES 7200.10 Enterprise Class SATA II 7200 RPM Hard Drive w/16 MB cache $379

Could someone explain whether these 2 drives would work in a Mac Pro and the difference between the two?

Also, what is the bestt brand of Ram to get, is there some to stay away from? Are there any rules of best choices when increasing Ram?
