Lennox Mall, Atlanta

Visited Friday afternoon with wife and daughter to replace daughter's aging MacBook with a new MBP. I had already decided a 13" would be fine; I was happy that she concurred.

It was a tax free weekend in Georgia so we expected a crowd in the mall. It wasn't overly crowded tho. Good business; not overwhelming business in any of the many stores we passed heading to the Apple store.

The Apple Store? PACKED! Well, not actually. The lines being carefully maintained outside the store kept the actual store from ever being packed but the business going on in it was fast & furious. There were three lines outside the store. One for software buyers; one for technical support help; and one for hardware buyers. There was a 4th line, too, that I didn't see until I got to be 'next' in line to go in; it was for shoppers who had made reservations.

There were lots of Apple employees conversing with the people in line. Very casual conversations or as pointed as the shopper wanted to make them about products. Gotta say, tho, it seems Apple goes out of its way to hire 'interesting looking' employees. Each seems to be making a statement (of some sort; I've never seen as much piercing or tattoos). We were in line about 40 minutes before finally crossing the stores threshold.

Upon making it into the store, we were introduced to our personal assistant, Tommy (who, oddly enough was not odd looking at all. No visible tats; no piercings; no mohawk). He got us to what we wanted to see and informed us of everything going on savings wise. He did a very nice job and while we bought more than I planned, he never pushed or 'sold us'... he just told us. Bought the 13" MBP; an HP printer; extended my MobileMe account and got the free (after mail in rebate) iPod Touch. Tommy took note of everything we wanted and wrote them on a piece of paper. Once he was clear that this was all we intended to get, he positioned us in the check out line, said our purchases would be at the counter when we got there, thanked us and was off to help some other ready buyer. Our time waiting to check out was about 10 minutes.

It was a sensational shopping experience. First class all the way. My wife, by no means an Apple fangirl but a mall shopper of the highest order, was truly astounded by the way Apple handled us and the crowd. Just an amazing attention to detail and no sign of any attempt to reduce the cost of sales thru employee cutbacks.

Longs, pat yourself on your back. With this company we're gonna be in the money for a while.

The extended warranty ran out last year, I never had a problem until
the last 3 months of my extended warranty. One of the two small boards
on the left side needed to be replaced and then after that they found that
my RAM slots on the logic board were not working properly. Both these
items were replaced by Apple with a 90 day warranty to continue.

2 months after the 90 days was up I started to see little “pixel worms” at
different points on my screen. This continued for about 2 weeks off and on.
Then the major shit started, vertical lines. Like not being able to tune in a
TV signal with out snow. Not wavy lines – just straight vertical lines. This
would happen off and on and now it happens on boot up and all the time.

It stopped for about 2 days, then returned. Now as of last night none of my applications
will launch. NONE! I booted up using the Apple Repair disc and ran it, also did the
same thing with Tech Tool Pro 4.0 and ran the big suite. After all that I ran the internal
disk utility and all came up clean. Still, no applications would launch.

Apple will not help me now unless I pay them, to look at it and assess the problem
and then charge me for the repair. Their quick answer was “it sounds like you just
need a new macbook Pro and problem fixed”. I have been out of work for 15+ months
and just got a job and am behind on all my bills and owe the IRS on top of that. I cannot
afford a new laptop as much as I would like one… “WITH FIREWIRE PORTS!!” LOL.

Anyway, any advice or help any one can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much and happy Friday.

I'll admit it here, I'm hooked on Everquest Macintosh Edition. Evercrack, whatever you want to call it. Been playing since 2005, found the game in the deepest farthest reaches of the Sony Online Entertainment web site. It's like they didn't want you to find it, so that they wouldn't have to provide tech support to any more Mac users. But somehow I managed to find the right page and download the game onto my G5.

Most of my friends from my Diablo 2 days of online MMORPGing left the game when WoW came out, or split off to go play Guildwars. When WoW first came out, I was sick of the sucky battle.net experience with D2 and Guildwars never ported their client over to Mac, so I decided to try something different.

I thought I knew a thing or two about EQ since my GF at the time and I had been playing EQ games on the PS2 for a while. i logged in to Al`Kabor and immediately remade my Dark Elf Shadowknight character that I had been playing on PS2. The game warned me that the race/class combination was of HIGH difficulty, but I didn't believe them.

I finished creating the character and logged into a completely empty beginning zone. There I stood in the Lodge of the Dead, staring at my guildmaster and wondering what on earth to do! Little did I know that I had logged into the deepest part of a confusing city layout. For some reason everything I attacked in my home town would keel me instantly if not sooner. Couldn't find my way out of town at all, so I gave up and made another character with an easier class/race combo.

Went back to my old standby D&D character type, Half Elf Ranger. Created him up and logged in again. This time I was born in Kelethin, a wood elf town built on a complicated series of platforms high in the trees. I proceeded to IMMEDIATELY fall off a platform to my doom on the ground below. I popped back up on the ground and couldn't find my way back into the city, so I wandered around a bit and found a statue of a pedestal with a book open on top of it. I clicked on the statue and was teleported to the wonderous city of New Tanaan.

Littile did I know that I had found the portal to the Plane of Knowledge.

Anyways to make a long story short, I found other players there who taught me the game. The population on Al`Kabor is pretty small and most of the population is in the upper levels so finding groups at the lower levels can be a challenge, but the folks are very friendly and many have alt characters that they will play in order to group with you.

SOE in their great wisdom decided to stop development on the EQ Mac server after the Planes of Power expansion was released. In a lot of ways, our server IS the classic EQ progression server. After PoP came many modifications to the game that skewed the play balance and allowed the players to bypass the regular progression of the original game. This trend continues on the PC versions of the game, and consequently the current state of EQPC is so different from the original game that many folks who started out on EQPC and have switched to Mac have discovered the EQ Mac server, frozen in time with none of the gimping and ridiculous nerfs of the PC servers, much to their collective delight.

Others have grown tired of WoW, and are looking for something more challenging. Plus the high end game of WoW is pretty dull unless you are in a hardcore raiding guild and that doesn't appeal to someone who wants a more relaxed gaming atmosphere.

EQ Macintosh Edition suffers from a severe under exposure problem, which is one of the reasons I'm writing this article.

SOE provides the client as a free download. You can download it here. You can make a character and play for free for 15 days to see how you like the game.

Check it out if you are an RPGer like me, you'll be glad you did!

Apple's Ailing CEO Takes Leave
Tech Icon's Absence Called a Blow to Firm

By Peter Whoriskey and Mike Musgrove
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, January 15, 2009; Page A01

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs announced yesterday that the illness he has downplayed for months even as it rendered him strikingly gaunt has turned out to be "more complex" and that he was taking a leave of absence from the company.

The decision was the latest turn in the tech icon's semi-private battle with an ailment, still undisclosed, that is testing not just his health but also his renowned capacity for controlling every detail.

It also comes as the prosperous economic era in which he launched the iPod and the iPhone -- two products that seemed to embody the epoch's infatuation with technology -- comes to a crashing close.

Jobs's long-standing reluctance to discuss details of his ailment and prognosis has infuriated some investors, and, as expected, Apple's share price plunged yesterday. In the announcement, Jobs, 53, said he would be taking medical leave until the end of June. But, he said, "as CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out."

Even so, investors and analysts view even the partial loss of Jobs, considered a seminal figure in the industry, as a critical blow that will be felt beyond the company.

Known for his tenacious attention to product design and aspirations to countercultural chic, Jobs has driven his engineers, sometimes relentlessly, to develop simple products that have won both aesthetic and technological plaudits.

With the exception of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, few corporate leaders are as fundamental to their company's identity as is Jobs.

In 1976, he co-founded the company, which had its first startling success with the Apple II, one of the first popular personal computers. After he was forced out in a boardroom coup in 1985, when he was 30, Apple languished.

Since his return to Apple in the 1990s, he has created products that have redefined consumer technology.

With the iPod and iTunes, Apple enabled people to carry their entire catalog of music anywhere with unprecedented ease. With the iPhone, his company elegantly brought to fruition the idea of a handheld device that could be used as a phone, a computer and an Internet connection.

The design of each, as expected, was sleek and attracted most of the attention. But their creation required not just engineering excellence but also dealmaking savvy.

To create the iTunes Store, Jobs had to cut a deal with wary record companies to sell their music at 99 cents a song. Likewise, the iPhone required him to negotiate a deal with the service provider AT&T.

There's no company that gets scrutinized more than Apple and no executive under the microscope more than Steve Jobs," said Michael Gartenberg, a tech industry analyst. "Nobody asks if Steve Ballmer is gaining weight or if Michael Dell has the sniffles or if Eric Schmidt has a headache. . . . Obviously, this is a blow."

In his absence, Jobs said, Tim Cook, an executive who has been with the company since 1998, will handle day-to-day operations.

"During the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought," the announcement said. "In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence."

"There's such a cult of personality around Jobs that it looks to outsiders like he's incredibly important in the day-to-day operations of the company," said Adam Engst, publisher of a Mac news site called TidBits. "It's hard to tell whether or not that's really true or if there are plenty of other people to step in to take over chunks of his job. I hope and believe Apple is a sufficiently grown-up company that a key executive can step out from day-to-day operations without impacting it in a big way."

Many investors seem to doubt that Jobs can easily be replaced, and the stock has ghoulishly run up and down depending on the medical reports.

In 2004, Jobs received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and had surgery, which apparently was successful. He did not disclose the illness until a speech at Stanford University in 2005.

"No one wants to die," he said in the speech. "Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life's change agent."

Then, last June, Jobs appeared strikingly thin, and the uncertainty over his health provoked new worries, particularly for investors. Stock prices suffered as a result.

The company deflected repeated questions about his health, citing his privacy.

But concern about Jobs's health arose again Dec. 16, when the company announced that he would not attend Macworld, a conference he has addressed in his trademark black turtleneck for several years. Instead, the company sent marketing chief Philip W. Schiller to make a presentation.

Apple's stock fell 2.7 percent yesterday, to $85.33. In after-hours trading last night, it was down an additional 7 percent.

Last week, seeking to quell the most dire rumors regarding his illness, Jobs disclosed that he was suffering from a "hormone imbalance."

"Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed," he wrote. "I've decided to share something very personal with the Apple community so that we can all relax and enjoy the show tomorrow."

The announcement indicated that blood tests had identified the trouble and that a "straightforward" nutritional remedy was being undertaken. The comforting suggestion that his ailment was not a recurrence of cancer sent the stock price up.

"As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008," he said last week. "Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause -- a hormone imbalance that has been 'robbing' me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. . . . The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I've already begun treatment."

He added: "So now I've said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this."

And it was all he said -- until yesterday, when his piecemeal, vague health disclosures led some Apple watchers to wonder whether they might reflect a corporate decision to withhold bad news, using privacy as a shield. Or the inconsistencies of a man wrestling with his mortality.

Still, his admirers cling to the belief that Jobs hasn't been bluffing himself or the public.

"Steve's not delusional," said Travis Good, a member of a local Apple user group known as Washington Apple Pi. "All I can say is from life's experience, a change in message such as this is usually due to a harsh revelation. He wouldn't have played his cards this way if he'd known. There must have been new medical insight, which forced him to change his plans."

I've been living in a world where moving my mouse pointer not only changes focus automatically but can also Autoraise a app to the top of my stack if I so desire and I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to configure my Macs to operate this way as well?

"Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners," Apple, Inc. said in a statement released on the company's website. "We strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation."

Apple, Inc.'s announcement comes two days short of one month since search engine Google's endorsement of the No On Proposition 8 campaign, a California ballot initiative that would amend the state's consititution to define marriage as a union between "one man and one woman."

"It is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8," Google's President of Technology Sergey Brin wrote on the company's official blog. "While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality."

Apple, Inc. is based out of Cupertino, California. The company specializes in its line of Macintosh consumer computers as well as the digital jukebox iPod. Apple's stock (AAPL) closed down this afternoon, falling 1.85 points to end at 96.38 points a share.

On my PC's I'm able to get 80 or 90 Mbps on file transfer all day. Moving 9 GB between the Macs is painfully slow.

I'm a Network admin but my experience in networking Macs is very limited. They are very easy to setup on the network, but obviously something is not setup properly.

I've tested across my network putting my PC's on the same cables the macs have been on and I'm consistently getting good speeds (well above 10mbps) through the switches and the routers so its not my network elements. This is important because I am editing video on my mac laptop and then pushing it up to my desktop mac for storage and upload.

This leads me to believe there is a setting some place that has the ethernet connections choked down on the Macs. Am I doing something wrong?

First off let me say that I have two machines. 1-Macbook Pro (Macintel) and 1-iMac G5 (Not Macintel) I trade files between the two. I just upload FCExpress to both machines and I am learning to edit with FCE.

Here is the Odd thing: Everything I edited prior to FCE would play choppy in Quicktime on my Desk top. Naturally I thought it was a memory issue and I started looking into adding more. Then I realized that a film I downloaded played just fine.(Yes I downloaded a movie, if you want to chastise me for this please do so in another thread) So I thought maybe it was something about iMovie. But this never happened before.. So I went to the laptop and again the films I edited on iMovie played choppy, now here's where it gets weirder, I burned a DVD of the short film I edited and it played just fine no choppiness.

Then I got curious and went to the project I was working on in FCExpress. It plays fine in play back while editing. So I exported it as a Quicktime movie file... and Damn it also plays choppy in Quicktime, so I waisted another DVD and burned the project and it plays fine.

My solution would be to dump Quicktime with all the plug ins and reinstall, However before I do anything drastic that will take too much time, I thought I would turn to you guys, oh wise Apple people and tell me is there a setting I have wrong? I downloaded many of the third party plug-ins, should I dump them? (The plug ins from the "third party " site as well as flip for mac)

I didn't have this issue before loading Final Cut

I have a question. I just moved all my music in my itunes library to an external harddrive to free up some space on my computer. itunes seems to recognize it ok and such. The problem i'm having is that sometimes when I play songs from itunes it is skipping. Like there is a delay. I'm sure this has to do with the hard drive, and someone told me it had something to do with the hard drive warming up. Is this true ? Is there some type of setting or something that I can change to fix this ?

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

1. Subscribe on iTunes by clicking the link below...

phobos.apple.com/WebObject...iewPodcast

Subscriptions is the only thing Apple tracks. When a new iPodcast is released, about once a week, it will download automatically.

2. Write a review on the iTunes page to let us know how we are doing and what other topics you might like to hear Dr. Bobby talk about.

3. Tell or forward the link to your friends.

By the way, last night I broke down and emailed Steve, inviting him to check out TCOM. Let's see if he responds!

Thanks, and remember...
UNCHECK:
Flask Pix
PhotoShop Image
Then in Miscellaneous...
UNCHECK ALL
The issue was fixed until my system downloaded and updated my Quicktime to 7.3 Now I can NOT uncheck the Quicktime HTML (QHTM) in the Miscellaneous window and once again Safari won't play videos I just get the big "Q" with the question mark

Why does Quicktime choose to torture us so....

I'm a former Mac guy gone PC for 20 years and now back to Mac, so please forgive me if these questions are basic.

'm having some trouble with my keyboard, the "home, end, page up and page down keys don't work) only the delete key and the help key work.

I got the mac second hand without a keyboard and I stopped by the Apple store and bought a new corded keyboard about 4 months ago and those keys have never worked since day one. I'm a keyboard shortcut junkie and having to transition back to using the mouse for certain things is wasting time and separating my hand from the keyboard.

Secondly I need more RAM desperately, can I stick standard SDRAM into the Mac, do they have to be matched and what is the maximum amount I can put in?

Thx for any help!

I shoot both raw & jpg images and then download them to my hard drive. With my PC, I could name the photos as I downloaded them and then "sort" the files between CR2 (raw) and jpegs - this would split the 2 different file types so that I could easily copy/paste the different file types into a sub folder. After downloading and making the main folder & sub-folders, I would burn them to a DVD as they are usually over 2gig in size.
I cannot get iPhoto to name the photos, nor get them to sort by file type nor burn them to DVD - as it wants to make a slideshow and all I want is to burn the images to DVD for a backup.
I found a program called "renamer4mac" that works easy enough at renaming the files but I still cannot seperate the jpgs from the raw files. Does anyone have experience with Photo Mechanic ?
I know I am green and still learning to use the Mac but I am becoming frustrated with trying to find real solutions through Apple support page and reading so many threads that do not answer my particular problems. Apple support states there is a Backup program in Applications but it is not there. Is this an extra program I need to purchase ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To all iPhone customers:
I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Not so. Even though I sent in all my forms and UPC codes (and yes, I made copies of all those, which I will now have to send in to apple and hope they accept them because they're not the originals), apple has managed to lose all that along the way. To further my frustration, the promo hotline they have set up to help is, hands down, the WORST phone system ever. It's designed to avoid (with a series of confusing prompts and roundabout number pushing) letting you, the customer, talk to someone who can help, and even when you (finally) accidentally stumble upon someone who is supposed to help, they don't know what to do. When you finally convince them that you need to talk to a manager, they accidentally drop your call, and you have to start the fun phone button pushing all over again, hoping you'll stumble upon another operator.

So I may be out $300 bucks because I fell for their "rebate" crap, and now they can't be bothered to help me get my money back. Thanks, Apple. I wouldn't have bought an extra ipod I don't need if I knew I was going to have to pay for it. But you said it was free. So far, it's not.

Anyone else had issues with rebates? Can anyone offer tips?

By PETER SVENSSON, AP Technology Writer Sat Aug 25, 2:20 AM ET

NEW YORK - Armed with a soldering iron and a large supply of energy drinks, a slight, curly haired teenager has developed a way to make the iPhone, arguably the gadget of the year, available to a much wider audience.

George Hotz of Glen Rock, N.J., spent his last summer before college figuring out how to "unlock" the iPhone, freeing it from being restricted to a single carrier, AT&T Inc.

The procedure, which the 17-year-old posted on his blog Thursday, raises the possibility of a cottage industry springing up to buy iPhones, unlocking them and then selling them to people who don't want AT&T service or can't get it, particularly overseas.

The phone, which combines an innovative touch-screen interface with the media-playing abilities of the iPod, is currently sold only in the U.S.

An AP reporter was able to verify that an iPhone Hotz brought to the AP's headquarters on Friday was unlocked. Hotz placed the reporter's T-Mobile SIM card, a small chip that identifies a phone to the network, in the iPhone. It then connected to T-Mobile's network and placed calls using the reporter's account.

T-Mobile is the only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone's cellular technology, but smaller carriers also use the technology, known as GSM. In Europe and Asia, GSM is the dominant network technology.

The hack is complicated and requires skill with both soldering and software, and missteps may result in the iPhone becoming useless, so few people will be able to follow the instructions.

"But that's the simplest I could make them," Hotz said.

Technology blog Engadget on Friday reported successfully unlocking an iPhone using a different method that required no tinkering with the hardware. The software was supplied by an anonymous group of hackers that apparently plans to charge for it.

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel and Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock said their companies had no comment on Hotz' exploit. Hotz said the companies had not been in touch with him.

Apple shares rose $4.23, or 3.2 percent, to close at $135.30 on Friday. AT&T shares gained 26 cents, or 0.7 percent, to close at $40.36.

The iPhone has already been made to work on overseas networks using another method, which involves copying information from the SIM chip, or Subscriber Identity Module.

The SIM-chip method does not involve any soldering, but does require special equipment, and it doesn't unlock the phone — each new SIM chip has to be reprogrammed for use on a particular iPhone.

Both hacks leave intact the iPhone's many functions, including a built-in camera and the ability to access Wi-Fi networks. The only thing that won't work is the "visual voicemail" feature, which lists voice messages as if they were incoming e-mail.

Since the details of both hacks are public, Apple may be able to modify the iPhone production line to make new phones invulnerable.

Analysts said it's unlikely Apple would overhaul the iPhone's wiring to thwart the new hack because the difficulty of the procedure is likely to keep it confined to hardcore hobbyists.

"I'm having a hard time figuring out where the real pain is going to come from in this," said David Chamberlain, principal analyst with market researcher In-Stat who follows mobile devices and services. "Just selling the piece of hardware, they've made a nice profit off that."

Apple has said it plans to introduce the phone in Europe this year, but it hasn't set a date or identified carriers.

There is apparently no U.S. law against unlocking cell phones. Last year, the Library of Congress specifically excluded cell-phone unlocking from coverage under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Among other things, the law has been used to prosecute people who modify game consoles to play a wider variety of games.

Hotz collaborated online with a large number of people to develop the unlocking process. Of smaller core group, two were in Russia.

"Then there are two guys who I think are somewhere U.S.-side," Hotz said. He knows them only by their online handles.

Hotz himself spent about 500 hours on the project since the iPhone went on sale. On Thursday, he put the unlocked iPhone up for sale on eBay, where the high bid was at $12,600 late Friday. The model, with 4 gigabytes of memory, sells for $499 new.

"Some of my friends think I wasted my summer but I think it was worth it," he told The Record of Bergen County, which reported Hotz's hack Friday.

Hotz heads for college on Saturday. He plans to major in neuroscience — or "hacking the brain" as he puts it — at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Associated Press Writer Jordan Robertson in San Francisco contributed to this story.
