Uhhh, no. Palm was already out, and scrambled together handwriting software to compete with Newton (that much I remember). As of '02 people are still hacking their newtons and keeping it on par with the Touch. Hmmm, maybe that's what the new big screens are for... :)

No. It was Pepsi-guy's big product. It's what helped tear down his regime. Steve killed it when he returned to Apple. It wasn't a big seller, as you know, but it had a loyal following and his action caused a lot of grumbling and probably the birth of Palm.

Whoops!

Actually, tho, the '1984' TV spot appeared in January '84. Steve was booted in Sept '85. Development on the Newton didn't begin until 1989.

I agree, they were always better, and somehow I think that the PC using world takes some pride in the fact that their ads are clunkier, duller, and plain, just like their computers - and ultimately their lives.

Apple ads will be studied in college ad classes for years to come. They tend to do EVERYTHING right, whether it's TV, print and now even online (anybody seen the new internet ad on the NY Times front page: 'Easy as 1-23'? Perfection!)

Apple's creative team keeps the message and the image very clean, very simple and very pointed. And it goes WAY back; not just the ongoing 'I'm a Mac' campaign. All the way back to when Jobs returned and treated us to the Think Different campaign.

And don't forget, '1984' was one of his last throws at Apple before they gave him the boot....and you know how heralded that TV spot has become.

Please... name me one MSFT commercial of print ad older than 5 years.

"What was the biggest problem with Windows 95?"
- The name.

The Biggest difference in the products is that apple finishes the damn things, gets them working properly, THEN starts the advertising campaign. Yes, it keeps them 6 months behind the cutting edge of technology, but the bulk of the users won't hear about the cutting edge for that period of time anyway. When MS announced Windows 95, they hadn't finished the contracts for all the software they were borrowing to build on. When a major contract fell through, they had to start a re-write.

I honestly believe that they haven't recovered since. This lead to all the dirty pool, backstabbing, class actions, etc.
