On a side note, a buddy of mine with an AppleTV just installed boxee ( www.boxee.tv ) and it expands the AppleTV functionality considerably - all without losing the original AppleTV OS.

That's right; it's got no standard TV inputs and doesn't have the required hardware to convert a TV signal to a digital storage format (as a TiVo, et al).

The AppleTV was meant pretty strictly as a network-attached media box; basically and iPod for your TV. The idea is that you buy shows from the iTunes Store, download them to your AppleTV when you want to watch them, and then play them back. It was never setup to be a cable-TV-tuner box.

If you have a PC or a MacPro (or PowerMac, but not an iMac), you can by a TV-tuner card, install MythTV ( http://www.mythtv.org/ ) or GeexBox ( http://www.geexbox.org/en/index.html ) or something ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=394599 ), and use it TiVo-style. Or you can just get an old TiVo, etc.

The nice thing about the MythTV route is that you don't have to pay TiVo monthly for channel programming info.

So, even if I don't care that it cant record hours and hours of HD stuff, and only want regular programming(I don't think I'll be getting HD cable, so it's not a big deal), I can't use it as a DVR? What the hell is it used for, then? I'm so confused.

Hey FreckledGirl, the answer to your question is not yet. Apple evidently has filed several patents to make and accessory and likely a all inclusive version in the future, however this is not one of the current offerings that I'm aware of. Looking at the iTV the main problem with using it as a DVR currently is the fact that the current onboard hard drive isnt large enough for hours and hours of high quality HDTV show recordings. Not to mention it lacks universal connections to allow for HDTV / RF input. Looking over the patent information with all the features that Apple plans to put into their DVR it not going to be cheap! (but then again nothing Apple ever is, and probably thankfully so).

Hey guys, I just moved to a new place and a friend of mine hooked up the cable for us. What I'm wondering is if I could use an appletv as a DVR, since I don't have one anymore. I'm pretty sure it's the way its supposed to be used, but I wasn't quite clear. Do you hook it up to the cable, then the TV? Just trying to figure it out. Yes, I should go to the Apple Store, but I'm too damn lazy. If I read everything correctly, I should be able to use it just fine, right?
