You *can* use a USB webcam. Since 10.3 OSX supports and includes a driver for USB webcams called "USB Video" (I think). I don't know whether your macbook will have any problem with it, but I suspect not. I am, in fact, using an iMac (2.4Ghz Core Duo) and a USB webcam at this very moment. I don't know if all USB webcams work with it. I am using a Logitech which cost about $70 as I recall. I don't know the model name. The Logitech web site does not say it is Mac compatible. It does have a USB symbol though.

As an alternative, you could buy a network camera.

You access this over your ethernet connection, not USB. The TRENDNet camera had better comments about it on Amazon than the DLink cameras. I think a network camera would be much easier to script with -- you could write a script to capture a frame periodically, because you access it via a URL. You could also make a local web page that viewed streams from multiple such cameras. Whereas, USB cameras are harder to script with (if you can do it at all) and you can only watch one feed at a time without special (read expensive) software designed for security systems.

I was just using a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 on my MacBook with Skype as a test to see if it would work on a Mac. We got this web cam for my wife's PC, but it worked just fine on my Mac with no additional software. I just plugged it in and it worked instantly - both the camera and the built-in microphone were recognized and available in Skype. I didn't try it with iChat, since I don't have any iChat buddies to test with, but I'm guessing it would would work with that, too. The Logitech also had much better low-light quality than the built-in iSight camera. There's also a version of the same camera for notebooks which is a little smaller, but I've read reviews that the little clamp thingy on the notebook version doesn't work as well as on the non-notebook version. Also, this webcam happens to be on sale at Best Buy for $30 off the usual $99 price, so it's a good deal. I highly recommend this Logitech web cam!

Sorry to reply to my own post, but I thought I'd give a quick little update. I tested the QuickCam Pro 9000 with iChat and it seems to work fine. iChat recognizes the camera and it's microphone just as Skype does, and the quality seems just as good as with Skype, which is better than the built-in iSight camera on my MacBook. I don't think you'd have any trouble with it. I also tested it with Photo Booth and it seems to work fine there, and I was even able to record little movies with Quicktime.
