While in Safari, I was going to sample a sound bite, instead I got the big "Q" with a question mark again. I had this issue before and it was fixed with the following solution...
In System preferences QUICKTIME/ MIME SETTINGS/Still Images
UNCHECK:
Flask Pix
PhotoShop Image
PDF Image
Then in Miscellaneous...
UNCHECK ALL
The issue was fixed until my system downloaded and updated my Quicktime to 7.3 Now I can NOT uncheck the Quicktime HTML (QHTM) in the Miscellaneous window and once again Safari won't play videos I just get the big "Q" with the question mark
Why does Quicktime choose to torture us so....
I now have to switch to Firefox or Netscape to listen to audio or view video
Is Quicktime at war with Safari?

Re: The big "Q" with a question mark
Sun, December 2, 2007 - 3:56 AMSkipper, I had the same problem. Go to quicktime, ( get "pro" ) if you haven't already, and click on "quicktime preferences" and go to 'advanced", and see if ENABLE FLASH is checked, (playback of adobe flash). If it is, go into the MIME settings and look to see if quicktime FLASH is enabled as well. If it is, they are conflicting with each other. Turn off the quicktime flash. It should solve your problem. -

Re: The big "Q" with a question mark
Sat, December 15, 2007 - 9:42 AMI just updated via Software Update today - 15 Dec - and see no Flash option anywhere. I have pro.
My problem is going to web sites with Shoutcast streams. Rather than iTunes opening the stream, QT pops up with an Invalid URL msg and I have to view the source and dig through it to get the shoutcast server info, click play on the shoutcast webpage which d/l's a playlist which I can open in iTunes. Heck of a roundabout way of listening to streaming music.
I haven't noticed a problem with any other MIME type.
FYI this occurs across all browsers - Safari, Seamonkey, Firefox, and a half dozen more. I'll not go into the odd problems Opera and Camino have with some pages. Flip4Mac is no help as it's audio settings are greyed out since QT 7 was first installed. I couldn't find any conflicts between the two, still had the problem after uninstalling flip.
I've not looked at any of the plists or searched any helper app folders....
