Slow LAN speeds

Ok so I'm having trouble getting any speed out of my Macs when transferring files over my LAN. At best I've gotten 3.18 Mbps out of my Macs on a file transfer. On my PC's I'm able to get 80 or 90 Mbps on file transfer all day. Moving 9 GB between the Macs is painfully slow.

I'm a Network admin but my experience in networking Macs is very limited. They are very easy to setup on the network, but obviously something is not setup properly.

I've tested across my network putting my PC's on the same cables the macs have been on and I'm consistently getting good speeds (well above 10mbps) through the switches and the routers so its not my network elements. This is important because I am editing video on my mac laptop and then pushing it up to my desktop mac for storage and upload.

This leads me to believe there is a setting some place that has the ethernet connections choked down on the Macs. Am I doing something wrong?

This sounds like it could be a duplex mis-match. You can see what the Mac is set to with the "ifconfig" command in a Terminal window - find the interface you're using by looking for the IP address, then look below that at the "media" line and see what it says. If it's not full-duplex then that's a likely the problem.

Otherwise, it could also be the file sharing protocol you're using. Have you tried doing some tests with different protocols, such as FTP?

    HTH - Good luck!
