Yeah, at some point though, it'll zero in on "net appliance". HTML standards haven't changed substantially in decades, so, maybe the next revision (to formalize and include CSS) will be the last for a long enough time to "appliance" a web device.

Appliance - dedicated use device or limited use device or application. Home appliances like the telephone and microwave perform a single use admirably and fairly universally without re-training or knowledge of what goes on behind the scenes. As computer application growth stagnates it becomes a sub-appliance (like the mouse, keyboard, etc) and little thought is given to it's operation. When any sub appliance or set of appliances can be spun off, they too become appliances (like dvd players, digital TV converters, cell phones, etc).

But wouldn't it be more like a netbook, in theory? A bit smaller, but still...

I suppose that could be an answer to the new book readers that have come out
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FI73MA/ref=amb_link_7645962_1
But if the price is to be much higher, I don't see it making much of a push in that direction.

Plus, think about it an 8" diagonal is about 7" x4" at the current aspect ratio. That's the size of a paperback book. Sure you can still fit it into a back pocket, but that would make it the largest portable/personal device available (laptops have to be opened to use, and should be set on a stable surface, they're out. I'm comparing to gameboy, PSP, blackberry, Palm, etc. )

Now if they make an iPhone version of that, I'll get one (and retire my trusty Tungsten T5 and freebie LG cell phone).

This could be very cool. :-)

If they actually make it 9", then the screen will be the same size as the original Mac.
