Some cell companies have a web-page that facilitates sending a text message to their own customers. Is there a universal SMS client I can use to send a text message to ANY phone? One that I can be sure isn't harvesting numbers for future spamming? Maybe it's a dashboard widget or something?

That's a good question . You'd think there would be, huh ?
i'd bet some of our pee cee friends might know the answer .
One can receive and send faxes from a 'puter since.. forever
Oh , i don't know , b t w . The iPhone® does all of that , and more .
i am not trying to be wise guy . i use a freaking TracPhone®
from Wally World and buy minutes . There's an actual iPhone®

Tue, May 27, 2008 - 9:44 AMSure, there are some widgets that will talk to your phone over bluetooth and use your phone to send the text message. You'll find some here:

Re: Sending Text Messages?
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 6:06 AMA worthy concern. It could still be happening with a widget, but perhaps is less likely because the bluetooth SMS widgets are running on your computer as opposed to being a web site somewhere. They could still be sending your info somewhere, but I think people would find out and apple would yank the widget from their compendium.
