So, my g4 now shuts off automatically once the power cord is taken out.
Any idea how to fix this?
I already tried power settings!

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 3:29 PMWhen I unplug my computers they turn off too. :) (Except my laptops.)
What G4 are we talking about here?

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 3:56 PMYou probably need a replacement on-board battery. Replacing those on G4 laptops is not for the faint of heart. Take your computer in for service. -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 4:31 PMThanks for the help everyone. I think I solved my problem. My 1 inch powerbook battery is shot. I press the tester button on the battery and I aint got any juice!
Is there an internal battery as well??? -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 4:33 PMYes, there's a tiny little internal battery that keeps the clock running when you switch main batteries and such. It's rarely 'user accessible' in laptops. -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 4:43 PMThe 12" G4 doesn't have a "Backup Battery" -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 5:47 PMEvery recent Apple laptop has some form of battery other than the removable Li-Ion battery. It keeps various parts of the computer alive when the computer is not plugged in and the removable battery is drained or removed. -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 8:43 PMThe G4s don't use a battery for this purpose
Check out the specs on MacTracker -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 12:14 AMMacTracker is a great piece of software, but there has to be a secondary source of power. Unless they have a *very* small rat on a treadmill in there, there's a battery in there to keep the system clock and a few other things from resetting when you power down the machine. Laws of physics are more authoritative than MacTracker. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Auto Shut Off?
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 1:15 AMMacTracker is just stating the Apple provided specs.
There are capacitive charge holders that can supply a trickle of currant - enough to keep the prams happy -
-
Re: Auto Shut Off?
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 8:08 AMAnd your point is? If the capacitor is toast, you'll see the same problems as with a dead battery.
Also, "trickle of currant", lol. :-) -
-
Re: Auto Shut Off?
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 8:42 AMThat is tastier than the normal current flow
I think Justin's problem is a dead main battery which is why his laptop shuts off when unplugged. If the capacitor were shot he would be losing his date and time settings. -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 8:46 AMOh, I see, I thought that his laptop was dying while closed and not plugged in, rather than just disconnecting the power while using the laptop. Now that I understand what he means, I agree with you. -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 7:03 PMUnless they have a *very* small rat on a treadmill in there, there's a battery in there to keep the system clock and a few other things from resetting when you power down the machine. GOOD ONE Ben! I think my mac *does* have a rat!
That doesnt explain why my main battery though shows zero bars when the tester is pressed down on!
Anyone can explain that?
Maybe a dead main battery AND a dead rat?

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 7:05 PMBTW, my clock keeps on resetting... -
-
Re: Auto Shut Off?
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 7:12 PMSounds like you need a new main battery - start with replacing it and see what happens. -

Re: Auto Shut Off?
Sun, November 4, 2007 - 1:37 PMYep, just did. Got a new OEM battery and she purrs like a kitten!
I read that there is no internal battery with the 12" macs.
Thanks for the help all!! -
