With Steve Jobs keynote at Macworld tomorrow....

How many people have ever used system 6 or even system 7?

How about system 8?

They were the hot new OS when they came out. System 7 was a huge improvement from 6. One could add fonts without the font mover utility.

How long ago did you get your first Mac?

My first mac was a Classic with 6 installed, but I took it up to 7.1 as soon as I could. Shortly after that I started repair jobs and got a chance to work on System 3.2 machines, sys 4 and 5.

and i couldn't keep my eye off the old Macintosh classic on his desk...
it wasn't that long ago 1990-1994, what was that an 9 inch screen?! LOL

My first Mac was a 512 KE (the fancy kind that could read double-sided 800K floppies) and I had to have two different boot floppies. One had system 3.02 to compose documents and another had a version that had the driver software for my StyleWriter II so that I could print if need be. System 7's modular design was a MAJOR improvement, although as a computer novice I didn't appreciate why until much later.

I forget.... I think mine was 3-something or maybe 4 -- running on one of those machines where you had to boot off the floppy (either a 512 or whatever came right after that -- what was that, the Mac Plus?)... It's all faded into the mists of time..... I remember it was really cool when I got an actual hard drive that would hold my OS & software & files even! And it was HUGE!!! 20MB! I couldn't imagine how I would EVER fill up that much space...

I also remember publishing a magazine laid out using PageMaker 1.0 right after it first came out -- yeah, that was a while ago....

I had a refurbished mac Plus with the external hard drive - without that - you could only use the floppy disk for data.

This wasn't mine - but it looked just like this www.blakespot.com/macplus.jpg

My roommate had a IIci - boy i was jealous. :)

Mine was a Mac II SE. Two floppy drives, and I thought I was hot shit when I added my own internal 30MB SCSI hard-drive. I think I was running System 7 at the time. It was a great machine.

Mac Classic and my first oops was putting the start-up folder in the trash to make more room. It was my girlfriend's (now wifey) comp that she was letting me use and I thought I broke it.

I have a Mac Classic that I believe still has System 6 installed and will BOOT. Been searching for a copy of Shinobi that will run on it!

Used systems 4 - 7.5, then there was the dark period in the land of operating systems which should not be mentioned, then back to Mac via OS X.

      ..yeah,
odd numbered old oses generally sucked . even numbered were the one's to get your hands on .i.e., 7.1 was a dog
i've complete sets of like 6.2 and..you must remember . .the ole Quicktime® 6.2, also . That particular ver. worked up until and including sys 9.1
      9.2 is optimized for wintel®. don't use it .
6.2 was on seven 3.5" diskettes .it was still 640k ..the kernal , i believe uniX was a 640k kernal os also, until about 1999
moving forward now. osX is not 640 k . . hah hah . .nor is Lunix® . .. linux has jumped to one gig
my recommedation would be to find the 7 x 6.2 os series diskettes and the extra Quicktime® 4.2 diskette and install that on your Lisa's and mac +'s or SE's
then just down load the old classic Quicktime® 6.2 . i was making live music videos with that setup in ≠ 1999 using a usb camera and internal mic on a G3 Powerbook
and Apple Video® .i believe that 6.2 was the first os that allowed one to get online a decent baud rate, also, then again, i was online with Compuserve® and GE®net in 1989 @1,200 with my mac + and Hayes® external modem . Mars Rovers are all macs . i still have 1986 ACTA® if n e one needs it . It was the program that gave up the triangles that turn when you click on them , early javascripting ® like the watch you see with the spinning hands ...to this day . .

        "9.2 is optimized for wintel®. don't use it . "

Huh? 9.2 came out long before the Intel Macs existed. And they removed support for "Classic" during the G4's.

I felt 9.1 or 9.2 was actually one of the best versions of MacOS (I remember one was bad, either 9.0 or 9.1) It finally supported multi-tasking copy functions. That was one of my biggest pet peeves with the old OS's (also why I always pretty much hated MacOS until OS X.) V8 was not so bad either. If I remember it 9 was basically an improvement of 8. 9.2 should have really been something like 8.5 or whatever...

          Tony, .aure. .

but please don't forget that the Apple® Corps actually plans ahead
They knew they would have to support Wintel® before they phased out the
          IBM PowerPC 950 - 970 platform . You will neevr run a mac® os prior to 9.2 on a Wintel®
chipset except may in some sort of wierd uniX emulation mode.
Macs® bios & wintel simply does not support it .

i always have thought that the Mortorola - IBM PowerPC 63000 chipset series was
the best Macintosh® platform ( same as the neXT =) to date . That's the one in the Mars Rovers i mentioned
The original Mars Rovers had a service life of 90 days . . . and they are still humming along
now, > two years later.. Gotta' go; gotta' eat !

I started with an Apple II+. It came with 32k, and only upper case letters.

We had to upgrade it with a special card to also have lower case letters. Seriously. :-)

My first Mac was a Mac+. I think it might have come with system 3.2. But that's just a vague memory.

      Yup ,
      i worked on an Apple® // clone in micronesia once ≠ 1980
it was an Orange ® from Taiwan or something
the motherboard was all blistered from the humidity - hopeless case
      Apple® // had c o l o r though
Mac +'s & SE's were great ..esp. if you had a Stylewriter® or an Imagewriter® printer
i just figgered out that the * new * ' Spaces ' is actually where the Widgets® reside
my guess i s that Apple® is developing an all Java® os at the moment
they must have licensed it from Sun Microsystems®
