I'm prolly going to get the 24" iMac in a couple of weeks. It has a 500GB HDD, nVidia graphics and seems to be what I need except for...
I want to dual boot some flavor of Linux on it. I kept my Macbook Pro Linux free for a year now and really miss it. I find myself missing so many features that make the computer easy to use. Not that Tiger is bad, but Linux has more features and is easier to use for me. Now the questions are,
-can I dual boot with Leopard and Linux? It will prolly be Mepis or Kubuntu (Debian derivative distros)
-is there any advantage to buying from the Apple store or buying on-line?

i believe you can in uniX protected mode, presuming you have enough R A M and such

on-ine you might be able to get a better deal on an extended waranttee. .and all the free offers they throw in
.. although it's difficult to drop an iMac®.. lol . warrantee . . .printers the SIMS® software, etc.
While you're deciding what to do .. download Tinkertool® from France and start fooling around with it if you haven't tried it already
Screw around with the Startup options to see what happen B 4 a mac® even starts up and what it's doing when it shuts down, too
. .it's worth the 20 Euro or whatever it costs, now . h t h ∞ mactechtribe

Re: New iMac 24"
Wed, May 28, 2008 - 7:53 AMYou most certainly can dual boot Mac OS and Linux. You'll have to Google around, but there's lots of useful info out there on the subject. Also, you may want to look into running linux in a virtual environment. I use VMWare Fusion and run Xubuntu on my MacBook Pro. It's a dream.
The only reason I can think of to go with the online Apple store is if you want a custom set up. If you want to add extra ram or HD space internally, ie.

Re: New iMac 24"
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 3:03 AMI bought a 24" Mac about two years ago and I am really disappointed with it.
I can't email from the damn thing, except from web-based email accounts. To email from this machine I have to buy a monthly subscription to a macmail account. That involves starting yet another account which I have to check for emails on a regular basis, and paying the Apple company for something I don't really want. Hold a gun at my head if you want my money, at least I'll agree to hand it over. If you want an inbuilt email system in a Mac you have to pay a fee, and you don't find out about this until after you've started using the damned thing.
I bought a new operating system, Leopard, at an additional cost of about $180 and that stopped the freezing that I experienced daily with OS10 or whatever it was called.
I bought this Mac with a view to keeping my photos on it, as I am a keen digital photographer. The damn iPhoto program not only imported all my photos, some 35000 of them, but it made duplicate copies while doing so. I had to download third party software and spend a week of night cleaning up my photo gallery.
When I want to attach some photos to an email, I have to make copies of the image and then reduce them from 3 or 4 megapixels to an email-friendly file size, then attach them one by one to a web-based email. This Apple company hasn't heard of Picasa, which works only on a PC, Apple don't seem to have an equivalent. Picasa allows me to do basic photo editing functions such as contrast and colour correction and cropping, then automatically reduces the whole selected batch to a pre-set size, in my case around 100kb seems fine, then emails the batch from either Outlook, my regular email program, or Gmail a really good web-based email program. Doing this same thing on my Mac takes four times as long.
I can't get these failings past the thick heads of Apple fans, they are all so defensive of their Macs that they can't consider that the PC has a superior operating system. I have a Sony Vaio which I would rather use anytime compared to my near-useless Mac. The Mac cost me nearly $4000 with software, the Sony about $2700. I love the Sony and just absolutely hate this f*****ing Mac. I can't think of anything I have purchased which has been a bigger disappointment
Beware the advertising hype that surrounds Apple and is propagated by Mac users. This is the Edsel of computers.
As someone so famously said (and got shouted down for saying so) my Mac is a piece of shit and yours will be too. Repent before its too late. These might be good for school kids to play with, but if you want to work with one, I think you'll be sorry

Re: New iMac 24"
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 9:34 AMI'll try to respond to you rant point-by-point
On a PC, if you don't want to use a web-based email program, don't you have to purchase Outlook? Same idea as purchasing macmail, isn't it?
OSX10.4 (Tiger) was a solid and reliable operating system. If you were having problems such as freezing, you probably could have used a simple fix provided by a program called Cocktail to clean out caches, etc. You didn't need to upgrade to 10.5 (Leopard) as a fix. I've been using every incarnation of OSX since 10.3 and they all have been reliable.
iPhoto. Had you read the instructions before jumping in you would have found out that in preferences you have option of having iPhoto create a library for you or allowing you to leave you photos in their original folders (unduplicated).
iPhoto is a consumer grade app and it DOES allow you to do basic photo editing functions such as contrast and colour correction and cropping. Read the instructions (again!!!) If you are serious about your photos, I suggest you look into Adobe Lightroom. As a pro photographer, I couldn't work without it
Your Mac operating system comes with an app called Preview which will do all the things you said Picasa does including scaling your pics to a reasonable email size, Free and included. You'll find it in your apps folder
It appears your problems are mostly due to a lack of understanding of what you are working with. I use both PC and Mac and wouldn't trade my 24" iMac for 10 Vaios.

Re: New iMac 24"
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 4:06 PMI am blown away by your statements. It seems very obvious that you did not ask or see what you could do.
MacMail works with anything, not just the Apple .mac (.me) service. I have it set to check my Google email in fact.
As for iPhoto, It actually has a lot of advanced features if you learn how to use it. Also like anything else, you should have taken your time to learn it, same goes for any PC application as well.
There are many resources available to you for help, rather then just condemning the system (I have heard people say the same thing about Windows,) how about opening your mind up and learning? You can go to an Apple store and meet with a Genius and they will show you how to set up your non-Apple paid for accounts. Also they can show you a ton of stuff with iPhoto. Personally though for professional photo stuff I would recommend something else as per Saxafraz's recommendations. On the PC Picasa is not a very good product for photo editing either. If you are looking for low end products, however, iPhoto does everything picasa can do and then some. You can upload to the Picasa website using a Mac at: picasa.google.com/mac_tools.html. It directly uses your iPhoto albums so there is no need for the download.
Always test new things with a few photos before dunking 50,000 photos into a new application, PC or Mac.
Just like Saxafraz, I use both PC's and Mac's.
The question now is would you like some assistance using your Mac or do you just want to complain about it? -

Re: New iMac 24"
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 3:40 AMthanks guys I will try some of your suggestions, especially with iPhoto.
I have trouble with two other things in day-to-day use.
I use NineMSN.com.au to keep me up to speed with the latest news. The audio component of the video files won't play on a Mac. I presume they are WMV files. I have downloaded a couple of different fixes (third party apps) to my Mac and that worked for about a week, then I went back to silent movie mode. WTF?
I don't want to use macmail, I already have a hotmail account from about fifteen years ago, which I have to monitor, a gmail account because I can send photos from my office PC, and two work-related email accounts. I don't need to boost my ego or my workload by having to look in another pigeon-hole every day. I bought Entourage, which sounded like it would be a cure-all, but it's just a device that copies everything from hotmail and gmail. When I go to respond to emails using Entourage it asks for my Macmail details. AAAARRRGGGGHHHHH !
Another annoying Mac feature: on a PC I can highlight text within a web page or document, right click, and email it to an associate from the pop-up list that appears. On a Mac I have to use copy, start an email account, then paste. Have I missed something? The PC way seems so logical.

Re: New iMac 24"
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 8:36 AMYou didn't list which apps you've tried but here are a couple that might help with you WMV probs
Flip4Mac
www.macupdate.com/info.php/...wmv-player
VLC

As for your email problems, I'm not as up on that subject but you might be better off querying the folks at Mac OSX Tribe

Re: New iMac 24"
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 9:51 AMFlip4Mac is a great little app for playing the WMV files and then some I think.
As for your mail...
Mail (the email program that comes with OS X) can be set to check email from any POP, IMAP, & even Exchange server. This includes GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, Apple's MobileMe mail, etc.
YOU DO NOT NEED APPLE's MobileMe mail Service.
Entourage can do the same. They are both email programs just like Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail on Windows, or even Eudora for both Mac & Windows. It is just a matter of configuring them correctly. I highly recommend using IMAP mode for email.
Here is a walk through for GMail: mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py
Here is how to enable IMAP in GMail: mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py
Google has a very extensive help center for their GMail service that will help you set it up with most programs.
By setting up GMail with IMAP, you can set your mac to access your GMail account (with either Mail or Entourage) AND have your PC set to access your GMail account using Outlook/WinMail. Both will see the same messages. See this article about deleting messages on GMail (it may explain the dupes): mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py
Also something else you may need to check is what your DEFAULT EMAIL CLIENT is:
In Entourage go to the "Preferences" (Entourage menu/Preferences) In General is a button that will say: "Set Entourage to be my default e-mail client" (This is probably why when you reply it pops open Mail which I am assuming is not configured so by default it will ask you to create an Apple MobileMe (MacMail as you are calling it) account.
In Mail (Apple Mail) go to the "Preferences" (Mail menu/Preferences) In General there is a pull down at the top that reads: "Default email reader:" and a pull box that will probably say: "Mail.app (3.x)" You can pull this down and select Entourage if you want Entourage to be the default.
Let me know if that works for you. Ohh I should also note that even if you set up Mail/Entourage/Outlook to check your email via IMAP, you will still be able to use the webmail version directly at gmail as well. -

Re: New iMac 24"
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 4:21 PMI actually use Thunderbird, which is free, for my email. I use Firefox as a web browser instead of crapfari, about the only app I bought was the Mark/Space syncing app.
